Please allow time as we are diligently working to make sure every engineer who joins the platform has an amazing experience.

How can I be an engineer on EngineEars?

We are currently allowing limited access to be a verified engineer on EngineEars, so we can be as involved as needed in any project and give focused attention to any issues that arise.

By doing this, we can make sure we stay on track to develop & build the best platform for you. If you haven't already, you can join the waitlist by creating an account and setting your account type to Engineer (via Edit Profile after signing up)

We will reach out once it is your turn to be onboarded.

Will you be supplying me with projects?

Upon sign-up, we will not be supplying you with projects directly. We encourage engineers to merge their work from off the platform. This allows engineers to quickly become verified, resulting in more exposure on the platform. Note, once your profile has been built up, it is possible to receive work from an artist/client looking for an engineer through our search feature as well as the Find My Engineer feature.

EngineEars goal is to improve your workflow in any way we can. We pride ourselves in making it easier for engineers to acquire payment, communicate project details and timelines, and display their portfolio - as well as offer exposure and promotion. We also offer tools and education as we have partnered with iZotope and Dolby to give our users plugin bundles and certification courses to help take your career to the next level.

We hope this helps you as you begin your journey with EngineEars! If you have any other questions or concerns please reach out to us at info@engineears.com. We are here to help!

How long is the waitlist/When will I be Onboarded?

Once we are ready to onboard you, you’ll receive an email inviting you to join a mandatory 30-minute Onboarding Call hosted by MixedByAli.Once onboarded, In order to be verified you’ll need to complete 2 projects and acquire a 4+ star rating for both for them to be submitted for internal review - internal review could take up to 2 weeks.

If you pass the review, you’ll be verified. If not we’ll provide feedback and you’ll be able to submit projects in the future for review.

When will I receive my verification results?

How do I send / receive files mid-project? (forgot to add files in upload)

You can now send files through the messenger via the platform mid-project! (send files in .zip format to send through the chat)

Also, you now have the ability to re-upload either the mix or the reference at the review step if any mistakes were made.

Can I upload past / completed projects to qualify for verification?

No, Uploading completed sessions conflicts with the Onboarding process. The two projects you submit for verification must be new projects that take place on the EngineEars platform.

This enables us to streamline the process and have audio experts review the A/B comparison right on an internal portal.

Do Clients have to create a profile to book me on EngineEars?

Yes, all artists and clients you work with need to create an account to book you.

Note, for artists, this process is fairly simple as all they need to create an account is an email address and password.

This is to ensure that there is no confusion behind communication or payments, as well to give each of your projects proper customer service.

If you are working with a label, send us the project information at info@engineears.com and we will personally reach out to all parties involved to ensure a smooth process using EngineEars.

How can I generate a discount code/link for my artist?

You have three options to make this happen.

1. Create a discount on an existing package - go to the service itself and ‘create a discount link’.

2. Start a project on the dashboard and go through the steps to set up the project. Once you get to the final overview price page, you are able to overwrite the total package price to an agreed-upon rate.

3. On your dashboard, you can use the Promo Code card to manage custom promo codes for artists to use for discounted rates when booking.

How are taxes handled on earnings?

It's your responsibility to pay your required personal taxes when you receive earnings from us (we do not withhold any funds for income tax purposes).

By signing up for Stripe connect, you do enable automatic tracking of your payouts so you can easily export your earnings at any time for tax purposes.

How do I collect pay / withdraw funds from a completed project?

Once you are onboarded, we have partnered with Stripe to allow you to withdraw directly to your bank, if supported by your country.

To do this, you can update your payment/bank information by clicking in the top right corner and choosing "Manage Payments" When you are ready to cash out funds for a completed project, click "Cash Out" on your Earnings card on the Dashboard.

An artist booked me, but I can’t / don’t want to accept the project. What should I do?

You have the option to accept or reject any project that is booked with you. The artist is able to provide the reference for you to help you make this decision!

Artist Specific Questions

What is EngineEars for Artists?

We democratize access to quality engineering for artists globally by allowing you to book and collaborate with any verified engineer on the platform. There are 3 main types of Engineers; Tracking (Recording) Engineer, Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer.

Tracking Engineers facilitate your recording process.

Mixing Engineers use the stems from your tracking engineer, and the stems or 2-track beat from your producer. They balance & blend all the levels and frequencies of these stems - this gives each sound the space it.

Mastering Engineers use the final mix to make all levels the same across all listening devices / platforms.

What is the difference in the services listed? / What Should I Book for my project?

Listed below are the differences between a 2-track mixing project, full-stem mixing project, mastering project, and a Dolby Atmos project:

A 2-Track mixing project is a stereo-mix (contains 2 speakers, a left and a right) that contains an already bounced instrumental and stemmed out vocals (stemmed out = multiple files). The engineer will have less control over each individual element within the beat/instrumental as it is bounced into one file - however, the engineer will have complete control over the vocals.

A Full-stem mixing project is also a stereo-mix (contains 2 speakers, a left and a right) - this is the most common mix you see/hear. The engineer has complete control over each individual element as both the instrumental and vocal files are sent stemmed out.

A Mastering project is the next step after the mixing process, it’s the process of preparing and optimizing recorded audio for distribution. The goal of mastering is to ensure that the audio sounds consistent across different playback systems and to make it as loud and impactful as possible without introducing distortion or other audio artifacts. For mastering, the engineer will only need the mixed-down, final version of the project in a high-resolution format such as WAV or AIFF.

A Dolby Atmos mixing project contains a 7.1 speaker setup (7 positioned speakers and 1 sub) which allows the engineer the ability to place and move sounds in a 3D environment with more precision, allowing for even more creative possibilities. The Dolby Atmos mix is useful when the song is already mixed in stereo, allowing the engineer to take the sound to the next level by repositioning the sounds to particular speakers, such as left, right, center, side, rear, or overhead speakers.

In conclusion: Choosing a 2-track mixing project will give the engineer control over the sonic quality of only the vocals. A full-stem mixing project will give the engineer more control over the quality of all files being mixed. A Mastering project will mainly allow the engineer to have control over the volume of the track across different playback systems. The Dolby Atmos mixing project will allow the engineer to creatively make changes, however, they will not have the technical mixing abilities they would in a full-stem or 2-track mix.

I prematurely booked a project, What should I do?

We suggest that you don't book your project until you have all needed stems and are ready for mixing.

If you and your engineer have already decided on a schedule, then after you book just email us at artistrelations@engineears.com to let us know!

I booked a project but I need to rebook. Can I get a refund?

Yes! Just email us at artistrelations@engineears.com and let us know if you would like to cancel your project.

The balance will be reflected in your account within 3 - 10 business days.

What happens if an engineer rejects my song?

We will reach out to you with alternative mixing engineers available in your budget. Then, we can transfer your project over to them so your mixing process can begin.

Alternatively, you can be refunded if you wish to rebook with an engineer at a later time.

What is a reference track?

A reference track is your rough mix - it's usually the export of the song you got from your tracking engineer, or that you export from your DAW.

A reference track lets the engineer hear what the full song sounds like with all the parts put together.

How do I upload stems?

Once you book a project, you will be prompted to upload your reference track as a single .wav file.

Then, once your booking is accepted by the engineer you will be prompted to upload all stems, and these should be together in 1 .zip folder - NOT INDIVIDUALLY.

What are stems? What’s the difference between a 2-track and full-mixing project?

Stems are the exported audio files that come out of the DAW (Digital Audio Workspace) used by the recording engineer, or producer.

Full-Mixing: all individual instruments on separate tracks, giving more control over the mix

-
will be individual tracks, exported from a DAW, for each element of the song. All vocal elements (lead, backgrounds, adlibs etc) and all instruments that make up the instrumental will be solo'd and bounced out as a .wav audio file. Each sound is on its own track. Effects (FX) can also have their own track.

- If you booked a Full-Mixing Package: you upload multiple instrumental files along with your vocal stems (lead vocals, your adlibs, backgrounds, and any effects)

2-Track : a instrumental (beat) that has all instruments on one bounced out exported track, with vocal stems

-
All vocal elements of the song (lead, backgrounds, adlibs etc) will be individual tracks with all beat / instrument elements being bounced out as a .wav audio file . All vocal elements  and all instruments that make up the instrumental will be solo'd. Each sound is on it's own track. Effects (FX) can also have their own track.

- If you booked a 2-Track Mixing Package: you upload one instrumental (beat) file along with your vocal stems (lead vocals, your adlibs and backgrounds, and any effects)

What does main and clean mean?

If a song has explicit words, you receive an explicit ‘main’ and an additional ‘clean’ main.

If the main has no explicit words, then you receive a ‘main’ and no clean version is needed because the main is already clean.

When uploading my Dolby Atmos mix to streaming platforms - do I need to upload both the stereo master file and Dolby Atmos mix?

Yes, you would need to upload both a stereo master as well as a Dolby Atmos mix that would go to Digital Service Providers.

What is the timeline for a mix?

Once the scheduled date for the mix arrives the engineer begins mixing the process usually takes up to 2 days.

For your mix review(s), after a period of 3 days past its deadline if you & engineer aren't in communication, or we haven't heard from you - the project may be moved forward so your engineer can upload your final project files and complete the project.

- If you need more time, we completely understand - just reach out to us at artistrelations@engineears.com and please make sure to communicate with your engineer in your EngineEars chat.

- Additional revisions can be added, for a percentage of the base rate, once the project is completed. Please just reach out to us if you would like to add one.

What happens if I’m not satisfied with my mix?

Our priority is getting you a high-quality mix you are satisfied with! If you are not happy with the mix, reach out to us at artistrelations@engineears.com and our internal review team will conduct an investigation.

Depending on the result of this investigation, we can offer a remedy with your current engineer, or we can transfer your project over to a new engineer, or issue a partial or full refund on a case by case basis.

Can you help me find an engineer?

We’d love to help show you how simple and efficient the process is to start a New Project and get your records mixed by one of the many talented mixing engineers that are listed on EngineEars.

Just email artistrelations@engineears.com answering the questions below and we can start by sending you some engineer profiles to select from within your budget.

- What is your budget per record?
- Is the record a 2-track instrumental and vocals, or a fully tracked-out beat and vocals?
